April 1944

My unit was shipped out by train to San Francisco.  I saw my father while I was there.  We were loaded about a ‘Victory Ship’ like a bunch of sheep headed for the round up.  A Victory Ship was a merchant class ship that carried men and material to the war zones.  They were hunted by the enemy and often sunk at sea, so they didn’t have the best reputation for being the safest passage to the place we were actually supposed to get shot at.  If they could kill us on the way to war it would save the enemy a lot of time and score lots of losses since the ship was pretty much self undefendable.
