It was here at Garipan that I was able to get back to my ship after it left me and I had been declared AWOL.  I actually beat my ship back to Saipan by taking a flight on a C47 (like a DC3).  My cousin was able to arrange the flight but I had to get from the air base to the naval base after landing on Garipan.  That wasn't so easy.  My captains face was full of surprise when he saw me on the dock waiting for him but he never said a word and I never got in any trouble over it.
